The size of the involved muscle group is unimportant, provided that maximal voluntary contraction is maintained to increase oxygen demand during the isometric exercise period. Measurements of hemodynamic data and ventricular function are obtained during sustained handgrip at a predetermined range (30% to 50% provided that maximal contraction is maintained for 3 to 4 minutes. Isometric exercise (skeletal muscle contraction without shortening) also may be performed using a handgrip with a graded hand dynamometer.
